Recipe FAQs

How do I know when the dog treats are done baking?

After 20 minutes, the treats will be cooked through but still slightly soft—perfect for dogs who prefer chewy treats. For crispier treats that are more shelf-stable, bake for an additional 10 minutes until they’re firm to the touch.

Can I use canned pumpkin instead of fresh pumpkin puree?

Yes! Canned pumpkin works perfectly for this recipe. Just make sure you’re using pure pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling, which contains spices and sugar that aren’t suitable for dogs.

Can I make these treats without eggs?

While eggs help bind the ingredients together, you can try substituting with 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana. The texture may be slightly different, but the treats will still be delicious and safe for your dog.

Expert Tips

  • Perfect Dough Consistency:Start with 2.5 cups flour and add more gradually until the dough is soft but not sticky. Too wet means the treats will spread during baking.
  • Use Parchment Paper:Line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easy.
  • Customize for Training:Cut smaller shapes for teaching tricks and training sessions without overfeeding your pup.
  • Test One First:Break off a small piece to test that it’s cooled properly and has the right texture.
  • Keep a Recipe Card:Save a recipe card with your dog’s preferred baking time for future batches.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

Room Temperature

Crispy treats (baked 30 minutes) can stay at room temperature in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

Refrigerator

Store soft or crispy treats in the refrigerator for up to one week in an airtight container.

Freezer

These pumpkin dog treats freeze beautifully! Store in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months. No need to thaw—dogs often enjoy them frozen, or let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes.

Make-Ahead

Prepare the dough and cut out shapes, then freeze unbaked on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to a bag. Bake from frozen, adding 2-3 minutes to the baking time.

Helpful Tips

Keep a batch in the freezer so you always have fresh treats ready for training, tricks, or special moments with your pup!
